In the novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini, Mariam's life is heaving with abuse and hatred. She is treated as if she is not worthy or valuable, especially by her husband Rasheed, who abuses and mistreats her. Afghan men are allowed to overrule all things pertaining to women and Mariam has no rights and no voice. All women are stripped of their individual rights and are forced into living the way the man wants them to. Throughout the novel, Mariam’s life in Afghanistan is filled with violence, loathing and even death. Just like Mariam, many Afghan women have suffered from physical mistreatment and the loss of equality between husband and wife.
