Assignment 2 - Topic One: Analyze a character from your novel whose mind is pulled in conflicting directions by two compelling desires, ambitions, obligations, or influences

In the novel "The Road" the author, Cormac McCarthy can combine what's a basically a horror tale with a tender father and son love story in a post-apocalyptic novel. This shows paternal love is ubiquitous given the relationship of the two main characters in the post-apocalyptic novel. The man's desires and obligations are to keep his son safe. He believes he has been appointed by God to protect his son and he does so at all costs. He even kills to protect his son. With him the boy's life is more important than his own life. Another words, the man's thirst for survival is fueled by the love for his son. Throughout the entire journey on the road, the man does not kill out of malice or food; he only hurts others when they threat his son's life. Just like when he hurts the man who attacks his son and the thief who takes the cart. In the novel, he shoots and kills the man who threatens the boy's life without hesitate. All he did come from the love toward his son. He never did anything for himself; he lives in order to find life for his son. He believes the only obligation he has is to protect his son. As the man is dying, he tells his son to eat his food, he knows he cannot live any longer. He makes sacrifices to keep his son alive. The man's action demonstrates the strength of his love. With him the boy is the reason he survivals this long and his hope. Love comes with sacrifice. Whenever love exists there will be sacrifice. A parent will do anything to protect their children from any harm. They will sacrifice themselves if it necessary. Their only goal is to keep their children safe and make them happy.
